Continuing the tradition…
A cracker is a brightly coloured paper tube, twisted at both ends, when pulled it “snaps” and a gift, joke and hat fall out.
In early 1830, Tom Smith started work as a small boy in a bakers and confectioners shop in London selling sweets. On a trip to Paris in 1840 he discovered the ‘bon bon’, a sugared almond wrapped in a twist of tissue paper. He decided to bring the ‘bon bon’ to London and during Christmas that year they sold extremely well.
Anxious to develop the ‘bon bon’ idea further Tom decided to place a small love motto in the tissue paper. The majority of ‘bon bons’ were still sold at Christmas and he began to think up ways to capitalise on this short but very profitable season and make his ‘bon bons’ even more appealing. It was the crackle of a log as he threw it on his fire that gave him the flash of inspiration and so he invented a way to make the cracker bang when pulled, which eventually led to the crackers we know today.
Crackers are traditionally used to decorate the dining table at Christmas. But due to their appeal and popularity they are now being used at other celebratory times such as Weddings, Birthdays, Easter, and Thanksgiving etc.
The traditional way of pulling a cracker is around a table, everyone crosses their arms holding their cracker in their right hand and taking the cracker of the person next to them in their left hand. Everyone pulls at the same time until they snap apart.
